IIS 7 Web Server Certificate Signing Request (CSR) Creation

A Complete Guideline to Generate CSR for Web Server IIS 7

If you have already generated the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and received your SSL Certificate, please click here for SSL Installation Instructions.

Step 1 – To open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, go to the Windows Start Menu and click Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager

Step 2 – In Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, select your servers 'Hostname' which is under 'Connections'

Step 3 – In the center menu of IIS, double-click the Server Certificates icon

Step 4 – : Under the Actions Menu, click on 'Create Certificate Request' to open the Create Certificate Request wizard.

Step 5 – In the 'Distinguished Name Properties' window, enter in the following details associated with your certificate:

  • Common Name – This is the primary domain name the certificate will secure. Typically, this will be a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) such as www.name-of-site.com or mail.example-site.net.
  • Organization – This the legal entity name of your registered company or organization.
  • Organizational Unit – This is the department within the organization which is using the SSL certificate (i.e. IT/Web Security).
  • City/ Locality – The city where your organization is registered in.
  • State/Province – The state where your organization is registered in. Please do not abbreviate your State (i.e. FL, CA, etc.).
  • Country/Region – Select your country's two-digit code.

Step 6 – Click on the 'Next' button.

Step 7 – Enter the following information in the 'Cryptographic Service Provider' window and then, click on the 'Next' button.

  • Cryptographic Service Provider: Choose 'Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider' from the drop-down menu.
  • Bit Length: Select 2048 or higher from the drop-down menu.

Step 8 – Enter a filename for your CSR file.

Please remember the filename and location where the CSR is saved. You will need to open the newly created CSR with a text editor (i.e. Notepad) later and copy/paste the text (including the BEGINNING and END tags) in the blank text box provided in the online SSL generation form via www.thesslstore.com.

Step 9 –After you complete validation and receive the SSL certificate from the issuing Certificate Authority, proceed with the next step using our SSL installation instructions.
